Land & Ranches
How Much Land Do You Actually Need?
Most families are happiest somewhere between five and fifty acres. Here's why.
One to five acres
Enough for privacy, a shop and a garden. Usually maintained with a riding mower and a weekend. Often within commuting distance of the Houston area, which keeps it usable year round.
Five to twenty-five acres
The sweet spot for most families. Room for a pond, horses, grandchildren on four-wheelers and real quiet, while still manageable without full-time help. May qualify for agricultural valuation depending on the county and use.
Twenty-five to one hundred acres
Now you're managing land: brush, fences, water and equipment. Excellent for hunting and cattle, and typically further from town.
One hundred acres and up
A genuine ranch operation or legacy holding. Plan on equipment, help and a real annual budget.
The right answer is the amount you'll still enjoy in August, when the grass is growing and it's ninety-eight degrees.
